SHILLONG: The NPP which is aiming to bring in a change in governance has assured freedom of the press and greater transparency as compared to the Congress- led MUA-II government, if the party is elected to power in the 2018 polls.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, NPP state president WR Kharlukhi on Monday said the press is free to criticise ‘the government which will be formed by NPP’ so that it can always take corrective steps.
“I will be the first one to resign from the party if any restriction is imposed on media by the party which I am heading”, he asserted.
“I welcome any criticism as this will lead to course correction which will ultimately help in effective and transparent governance unlike the current government which believes in secrecy rather than openness”, Kharlukhi said.
He also referred to the ban imposed on media from reporting on all forms of agitations including bandhs which, according to him was the handiwork of the Congress- led government.
“It is the duty of the state government to maintain law and order in all circumstances, and instead it chose the easy and dangerous path of gagging the media”, Kharlukhi said.
