SHILLONG: In a bold move signaling a rare seriousness at addressing administrative lacunae, the State Government has transferred a whole bunch of Taxation department staff attached to the Byrnihat check gate including the Superintendent of Taxes.

Informing this on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said, “The Government has decided to transfer the whole set of staff of the Taxation department including the Superintendent of Taxes after receiving reports of huge irregularities in the functioning of the check gates.”

“We will not hesitate to take similar steps if the Government comes across any irregularities in the functioning of any department or office,” the Chief Minister asserted.

He further said this was only a small step towards gearing up the Government machinery and ensuring that “they deliver what they are meant to”.

It may be mentioned that the Assembly Committee headed by leader of the Opposition Conrad Sangma had recently found serious irregularities in the maintenance of records and books of accounts of the different revenue earning agencies at the check/toll gates.

The NCP leader had stated then that so much of revenue that could have accrued to the State was flowing down the drain because the officials were shirking their duties or were in collusion with some politicians.
