SHILLONG: The motive of UDP and HSPDP leaders, Donkupar Roy and Ardent Basaiawmoit in forming the alliance was only to benefit the duo, according to Nongkrem MDC, HS Shylla.
“The decision was self centered to benefit only the two leaders and it was the fear of losing the elections which prompted Roy and Ardent to form the alliance,” Shylla said.
Shylla has also justified leaving UDP and PDF to join NPP while downplaying the turncoat comments of the critics.
He also said the inequitable distribution of funds meant for the MDCs has also prompted him to leave PDF.
After contesting and winning the by-poll to KHADC in 2016 on a UDP ticket, Shylla said he parted ways with UDP since the leadership entered into an alliance with HSPDP in Nongkrem which he won defeating the UDP candidate in the KHADC polls.
Shylla said he had no other choice than to leave UDP since the alliance had projected the single candidature of Ardent Basaiawmoit for the 2018 polls.
“How could UDP president agree to have an alliance with HSPDP which resulted in resentments in several constituencies”, he said.
Besides Shylla, others politicians who were affected due to the UDP-HSPDP alliance were Hamlet Dohling from Mylliem who has already joined PDF and UDP legislator Remington Pyngrope from Mawkynrew who is set to join NPP.
Commenting on PDF and UDP-HSPDP alliance, Shylla said they were not complete parties unlike NPP which has presence in both Khasi Hills and Garo Hills.
“As per the current trend, NPP is going to be the single largest party and my supporters want me to associate with the party which will be forming the next government in Meghalaya”, he said.
He said a non-Congress government led by NPP will be formed after the 2018 polls and the coalition may have a chief minister from Khasi-Jaintia Hills if the region secures maximum seats for NPP.
Reiterating his support to formation of a Khasi-Jaintia state, Shylla said if the states like Goa and Mizoram which have 40-member Houses can function smoothly, there will not be any problem for the formation of the Khasi-Jaintia state.
