Balasore: India’s indigenously developed multi-barrel rocket launcher weapon system ‘Pinaka’ was test-fired from Proof and Experiential Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from here on Wednesday.

Integrated Test Range sources said the live demonstration of firing was carried out for a TV channel for preparation of a documentary film, a senior scientist of PXE said.

‘Pinaka’, which has undergone several tough tests since 1995, could fire salvo of 12 rockets in 44 seconds.

One salvo each from the battery of six launchers can neutralise at a time a target area of 3.9 sq km. The system’s capability to incorporate several types of warheads makes the rocket launcher deadly for the enemy as it can even destroy their solid structures and bunkers within a range of 40 km.
