SHILLONG: Shillong police is now going all out to contain the menace of creating nuisance besides littering by effectively implementing the provisions of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010.
East Khasi Hills superintendent of police, Davis Marak on Thursday told reporters that 10,000 stickers have been distributed among local taxis and other commercial vehicles to create awareness about Sections 102 and 110 of the Act, which deal with littering and public nuisance.
Marak informed that police have registered 91 cases from January 1 to October 31 this year against the violators under the two sections of the Act and during the same period, 247 individuals were apprehended and 25 cases disposed off by the court with 32 persons convicted.
The fines realized during this period amounted to Rs 1 lakh, while the remaining cases are still pending in the court.
In the past couple of months, police conducted various awareness programmes on the issue of littering.
“These pamphlets which we are distributing are in English but soon we will be distributing pamphlets written in Khasi, Garo and Hindi,” he said.
Informing that there is a Police Municipal Whatsapp group for sharing photos
and information for better collaboration between police and Shillong Municipal Board, Marak said, “Through the Whatsapp group, police have managed to take action against a few people involved in littering.”
