SPSB top tally, hosts Meghalaya go medal-less

National Junior Archery Championship concludes

 SHILLONG: Steel Plant and Services Board (SPSB) topped the medals tally even as hosts Meghalaya failed to win a single medal in the 34th National Junior Archery Championships which concluded here on Thursday.

Apart from Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, none of the other North Eastern States managed to win a medal in the championship.

Winners SPSB bagged 11 gold, six silver and five bronze medals. Jharkhand with five gold, one silver and three bronze medals was in the second position while Andhra Pradesh with three gold, two silver and one bronze was placed third.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Sports and Youth Affairs Bindo M Lanong said that archery is not only a traditional sport of the State but also a discipline recognized by the Government.

Commenting on the traditional archery (teer), Lanong said that it is contributing immensely to the State exchequer.

While maintaining that the people in the State are experts when it comes to the traditional bow and arrow, there is a long way to go for the athletes to specialise in the handling of the modern tools.

On the fourth day, SPSB won the gold in the Recurve Round for Boy’s and Compound Round for Girl’s team event with total scores of 216 and 207 respectively. Assam boys and girls won a Silver and a Bronze in the same events.
