Warjri dismisses reports that she is being sidelined

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The newly-appointed Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission (SWC), Ms Roshan Warjri, has dismissed all claims that her appointment as the SWC chief is an attempt by the Government to prevent her from contesting the forthcoming 2013 Assembly polls in the State.

“I don’t see any such attempts and I accepted this responsibility with no hesitations,” Warjri said.

It may be recalled that following her appointment as the SWC Chairperson on November 22 last, observers believed there Warjri’s appointment was a clever attempt at pre-empting her from contesting the next election against Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Friday Lyngdoh from Shillong North constituency in the upcoming 2013 Assembly polls.

On an earlier occasion, the MPCC president had even assured Warjri that he would back out from contesting the polls to allow her to contest, following which Warjri even left the UDP to join the Congress party.

Incidentally, the MPCC president seems to have reneged from his commitment and reports say that he is all set to contest the election.

However, Warjri has termed such reports as baseless and unfounded.

“There is no truth in them and I accepted this job since it was not handed over to me by force,” she said.

Talking about her new assignment, Warjri said that she was looking forward to a collective commission and assured to work for the benefit of the women folk of the State.

Other members of the Commission include Ms Meena Kharkongor, Advocate, Ms Wimon Tariang, Ms Angela R Ingty from Tura and Ms Gamchi G Marak of Williamnagar.
