SHILLONG: President of Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and a member of the state Legislative Assembly, Ardent Basaiawmoit has shot off a letter to Union Health Minister, Jagat Prakash Nadda, on the derecognition of Post Graduate courses at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) here.

In the letter, he stated that during the inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI), it was noticed that several departments had been recommended for derecognition, like anesthesia, radiology, general surgery and medicine.

Upon enquiry, they have come to know that the institute has increased the number of post graduate seats in certain disciplines without the permission of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Basaiawmoit stated that the Institute had not tried to fulfill the deficiencies pointed by the expert committee for running the post-graduate courses.

Terming the Director, DM Thappa as defiant, he alleged that Thappa had refused to acknowledge the deficiencies and had sent the compliance report to MCI with some alterations in the appointments of faculty at NEIGRIHMS and consequently put the Institute at loggerheads with the MCI.

Stating that the de-cognition of post graduate courses is a matter of serious concern for the students and teachers, Basaiawmoit expressed his deep disappointment as to the apathy of the institute in correcting the deficiencies and taking a definite course of action to comply with the minimum requirements of MCI.

Having outlined the issues, he has urged Nadda to examine the matter and redeem the institute and to restore its prestige.
