GUWAHATI: Following his meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the chief minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday asserted that the territorial integrity of Assam would not be compromised in the wake of any agreement to solve the vexed Naga problem between the Government of India and Naga groups in talks with the government.
Sonowal met Rajnah Singh in New Delhi on Monday. He stated that government of India was committed to maintain peace and harmony in the Northeast Region. Assam’s map would remain same and the dignity of the people of the state would be upheld, he assured.
There have been growing demand in the state for making public the clauses of the much-trumpeted `framework of agreement’ signed between the Naga rebel group NSCN-IM and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August ,2015 in view of the apprehension that the territorial integrity of the state would be at stake if the Government had agreed to the NSCN-IM’s demand for unification of Naga-inhabited areas of the Northeast under one administrative block (Nagalim).
Sonowal also held discussions on the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process in the state. The CM said he had conveyed to the Union Home Minister the State Government’s preparedness to tackle the situation that may arise in the state in the post NRC publication. He also allayed fears that names of any genuine citizens would be left out from the updated NRC.
Some organisation in Assam are engaged in launching a campaign that once the NRC was updated names of many genuine citizens who could not submit
