SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Ri-Bhoi district and Raid Nongtung Circle has alleged that the Assam government is encroaching into Meghalaya territory at Umru village near Tyrso, Raid Nongtung Area Block-II with a motive to set up a Police Outpost.

The group on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma suggesting   that the long pending boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya should be taken up with the Supreme Court of India or with the Central government if both states cannot resolve the dispute through dialogues.

Addressing reporters here in the city on Monday, HYC Ri-Bhoi district general secretary Hercules Suting said the encroachment on the part of Assam violated the status quo agreement signed by the two states, thereby creating tension in the area under Raid Nongtung.

“The inter-state border dispute is a long pending and unresolved issue and till date no final solution has been derived nor the issue is being resolved,” he said.

The NGO added that the status quo should be maintained   if both the state governments choose dialogue for resolving the issue

He, however, said, “If the Assam government continues to violate the agreement then there is no point for further dialogues.”

Condemning the action of the Assam government, he urged the authorities to take necessary and immediate action against such acts and deal with the issue in a serious manner.
