TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) sponsored South Garo Hills bandh on Friday severely hit essential services in the district headquarters of Baghmara as all government and business hubs experienced a closure.
The GSU which called for the 5 AM to 5 PM closure is demanding the transfer of the district’s Deputy Commissioner, Dr BDR Tiwari.
The bandh had little or no affect in the rest of the State but in Baghmara vehicular traffic was off the roads and the government offices together with educational and financial institutions were shutdown for the day. There were no untoward incidents recorded from any part of the district, according to the district Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh.
GSU is seeking the removal of the Deputy Commissioner, accusing him of delaying the results of the district selection committee examinations for lower posts in the government and claims that efforts need to be made.
The Union claims that the officer is deliberately holding up the results for personal reasons whereas the officer concerned is allegedly worried there were discrepancies in the final list and hence required a proper scrutiny.
