Aircel not to shut operation in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: One of the leading cellular companies in Meghalaya, Aircel has denied the   media reports that the firm would shut down its operations in Shillong and in other parts of the country.

Speaking to media persons here in Shillong,  Aircel Circle Business head,  Nilaj Mahalanavis said that Aircel in its 12 year journey had  strengthened its customer data base in Meghalaya to around  7 lakhs.

Responding to query about the non-availability of network coverage in border areas, the official informed that as per the guidelines of Department of Telecom, all the   mobile companies in the country have to stop their network coverage before 500 metres of the international border.

Asserting that installing mobile towers in Shillong is a major challenge, Nilaj Mahalanavis further claimed that mobile towers were safe. He also stated that Aircel in the past   2-3 years had installed around 70  towers in Meghalaya.
