SHILLONG: Aircel, a leading cellular company here, has denied reports appearing in the media that it would shut down operations in the city and other parts of the country.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Aircel circle business head, Nilaj Mahalanavis said such rumours have been spread with malafide intentions.
“Aircel was there and it will be there,” he said.
Mahalanavis informed that with the company completing 12 years, it has strengthened its customer data base in Meghalaya to around 7 lakh. Responding to a query on the non-availability of network in the border areas, the official said that in accordance with the guidelines of department of telecom, mobile companies in the country cannot provide network coverage within 500 metres from the international border. There is however no such regulation from the Bangladesh government.
Asserting that installation of mobile towers here is major challenge, the official claimed that the company’s mobile towers were safe with no harmful radiation emitting from the towers. Mahalanavis further informed that a good number of Reliance subscribers have migrated to Aircel and the process was still on.
He also stated that Aircel in the past two to three years has installed around 70 towers in Meghalaya and around 700 in the North East.
