SHILLONG: Alleged apathy on the part of authorities to alert drivers about speed-breakers has resulted in many accidents in the city.
Recently, a woman was injured after she lost control of her vehicle apparently after failing to locate a speed-breaker near the MSEB office.
The vehicle fell into a roadside ditch after hitting the speed-breaker.
Some residents attributed the accident to alleged negligence of the concerned authority to paint the speed-breaker so that drivers can locate it from a distance and accordingly decelerate.
There are rampant cases where speed-breakers are newly constructed and no efforts made by authorities to warn vehicle drivers on such stretches.
It is also seen that there is no regulation to the height of speed-breakers constructed in the city. The road leading to NEHU from Mawroh is a prime example where the sheer height of the speed breakers makes it difficult for drivers/riders to cross them even after decelerating to a speed below 10 km/hr.
When contacted, a PWD official said if there were such complaints they would be discussed so that the problems arising out of them could be addressed.
