Guwahati: Two persons were killed in separate attacks by elephants in lower Assam’s Sonitpur district, official sources said on Saturday.

One man identified as Ramesh Tengela was killed when a herd of wild elephants attacked him at Paithajan of Pabhoi in Biswanath Chariali area last night.

At Tilani Bangaligaon, Suku Santhal was trampled to death by another herd of elephants the same night, sources said.

Wild elephant herds were coming down from the hills at night and entering human habitations along the Assam-Arunachal border areas within the district and destroying dwelling houses, rice fields and other crops in the last few weeks, they said.

Following the frequent attacks by the pachyderms, local people are keeping 24-hour vigil on the elephant corridors, villages and fields. (PTI)
