Sonowal inaugurates AIBA World Youth Women’s Boxing Championship

GUWAHATI: The AIBA World Youth Women’s Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at Md. Toyabullah Hockey Stadium in Bhetapara here when chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal declared the championship open at a glittering ceremony on Sunday evening.

The championship which saw participation of 30 countries will continue till November 26. Organised by Association of Internationale de Boxe Amateur (AIBA) popularly known as International Boxing Association, the championship is expected to focus its spotlight on talented young female boxers from around the world.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Sonowal said that the AIBA World Youth Women’s Boxing Championship was yet another step of the efforts of the State Government in making Guwahati a sports capital of country. He also said that State Government was relentlessly trying to make Assam and more particularly Guwahati as an important destination of sports. He said Assam being a land where sports were loved and adored, this event would open up new vistas for the game to gain popularity in the state.

Expressing his gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for according top priority to Sports and helping Assam in its bid to make the State an important sports destination, he said that his government was also working very hard to create world class sports infrastructure in Guwahati and enabling the city to play host to several international events successfully. He also reiterated his government’s commitment to creating ideal sports infrastructure throughout the state for the promotion of sports and creation sporting talents in Assam.
