SHILLONG: Finance secretary of the banned militant outfit, National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), Inovi Avika Assumi, was arrested from Demseiniong, Shillong on Saturday night and remanded to five days’ police custody.

Assumi’s hideout was raided in a joint operation by special cell of East Khasi Hills police and Assam Rifles.

Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Davis Marak confirmed, “He (Assumi) was caught at around 10:30 pm on Saturday.”

The SP said after being tipped off by the Assam Rifles, the police had been monitoring the movements of the NSCN-K leader and put him under surveillance for the last 4-5 days.

He added that his wife and brother in law were also detained initially but not arrested. “There were three people when we raided his house, his wife, her brother and him,” he added.

Marak stated that investigation was ongoing and police would ask for additional custody of the militants if there was a need.

The police official denied to accept that state, particularly, had become a safe haven for militant groups and said, “There will always be individuals who will disguise themselves.”

NSCN (K) has been designated a terrorist organization in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The group signed a ceasefire pact with Government of India on April 27, 2001. However, the then chairman of the group, Late S S Khaplang, had unilaterally called off the ceasefire in April 2015.  Since then operation has been intensified against the group.
