NONGSTOIN: A major fire broke out in a Shallang market, West Khasi Hills on Wednesday evening destroying more than 25 shops.
Apparently, the fire occured at 6 pm due to short circuit in one of the shops near the road to Sacred Heart Parish. The flames spread to other shops engulfing them. A pharmacy, mobile shops, general stores, an eatery, a tea stall and others were also affected. The blasts were so powerful that it was heard from a distance.
The investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire. The estimated loss in the incident is yet to be ascertained, the police said. However, no casualties were reported.
The fire emergency service is not available in Sahllang PS. The OC had to inform Rongjeng and Riangdo PS and only after an hour the Police and Emergency service arrived on the spot, Circle Inspector of Nongstoin Police D. Mawlein informed.
However, before the arrival of the Emergency Service from Rongjeng and Riangdo, 30 police personal led by the OC and CI rushed to the spot and with the help of one JCB they dismantled in the middle of the burning shops, and prevented the others from further destruction.
On the other hand, the public was fuming after learning that there is no fire emergency service in the area. The angry mob of Shallang pelted stones at the fire and emergency service vehicle and the firemen.
“It was very inconsiderate on behalf of public. Throwing stones at the police, who were trying to help them is not acceptable. They don’t know how to appreciate police efforts. This attitude will affect the relation between the local people and the Shallang Police,” Mawlein said.
He further added that the Police have registered a case against those who involved in pelting stones and destroying government vehicles.
