SHILLONG: The 118th Foundation Day of the Seng Khasi was observed on Thursday. The day, which is regarded as a revered day for the Khasis was celebrated with traditional fervor as thousands of Seng Khasi followers in their traditional attire thronged the Weiking ground at Jaiaw.
The Seng Khasi was formed on November 23, 1899, by 16 young men, who stood up and led the community against the oppression of the British. On this they, the tribe remembered the stand made by these lads and pay tribute to them.
This stand marked the beginning of the Seng Khasi movement which aimed to preserve, conserve the Khasi beliefs, tradition and culture.
Speaking to reporters, Synroplang Kharshiing, member of the Seng Khasi, however, threw lights on the challenges faced in the present days.
“Issues like narrow-mindedness surfaces, intolerance and disrespect towards others. This is a major threat. Our ancestors taught us to love self and respect others,” he said.He further added that it depends on the people, who no longer follow the traditional religion as to whether they still hold on to the ancestral teaching.
Kharshiing stated that the Seng Khasi will continue to teach its values to people.
