SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has on Sunday lashed out at HSPDP’s district council member Teilinia Thangkhiew over allegations of wooing Nepalese by assuring them enrolment for voters’ ID. Condemning her move, the union said it was selfish of her to pull such a stunt in a bid to garner votes from the immigrants.
KSU general secretary Rishot Kharbani, in a statement said, “The organisation has looked up to her as someone who will protect the state against illegal immigrants but she is trying to gain their confidence and make them residents of the state.”
Alleging votebank politics, KSU went on to claim that they were making efforts to fight against illegal immigrants while others like Thangkhiew embracing the immigrants for her personal benefit without looking at the dangers of illegal immigration. The union stated that her ploy to assure voter cards has hurt the sentiments of the people in West Khasi Hills, especially at Langpih.
“The Nepalese in Langpih are a stumbling block to the indigenous people there, whereas in Shillong, the representatives are trying to woo the immigrants for vote by assuring them voter cards,” the union stated.
KSU added that it shows that representatives do not hesitate to divide the Khasi community for their self interest.
