SHILLONG: The Missionary Sisters of May Help of Christians has announced the passing away of Sr. Elizabeth Packumala MSMHC, a former Superior General of the Congregation on Monday at around 2. 30 am at Rabindranath Tagore International Hospital, Kolkata due to cardiac arrest.
Her mortal remains will be at St. Margaret’s Convent Peachlands, Shillong Chapel from early hours of November 29 up to 12 noon. There will be a requiem Mass presided over by Fr. George Maliekal SDB, at 6.30am at St. Margaret’s Convent Chapel. The mortal remains will be taken at 12 noon to the Congregation’s Cemetery at Mawlai, Mawroh for the funeral Mass and final rites to be held at 2.00pm presided over by Archbishop of Shillong, Dominic Jala.
She came to Northeast in 1957 and joined the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians at St. Mary’s Convent Barpeta Road and made her first Religious Profession in December 1961. She completed her Studies at St. Mary’s College, Shillong and served as Headmistress at St. Mary’s School Barpeta Road from 1965 to 1968.
She had served as Headmistress at Sacred Heart M. E. School Golaghat Assam, Superior, and administrator of the community at Barpeta Road, General Councillor and Superior, Headmistress and administrator at Little Flower School Malki, Shillong.
From 1976 to 1988 Sr. Elizabeth was at St. Margaret’s Convent, Peachlands, Shillong serving as the Assistant General of the Congregation. The General Chapter of January 1988, elected Sr. Elizabeth to the office of the Superior General of the Congregation, an office she held for two consecutive terms until 2000.
Later, she accepted the office of the Provincial Superior in 2005 at St. Margaret’s Convent, Peachlands, and from 2006 to 2010 at Ichapur, Kolkata.
Since 2014 till her death, she rendered her service as Vice Superior, teacher and formator.
