SHILLONG: As the city traffic police are contemplating issuing e-challans to violators, the State Government has now decided to float an expression of interest (EOI) for procuring point of Sale (POS) machines.

East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak informed that a number of meeting were held for introducing the E-challan and in the last meeting, it was decided to float a tender for procuring POS machines since Transport department is also involved in imposing fines through their enforcing wing.

Marak informed that   there were seven traffic branches in Shillong alone and each traffic branch would require around   10 POS machines.

It may be mentioned that National Informatics Centre (NIC) is also preparing an android software for the initiative as has been done in other metropolitan cities.

“I can assure you that we are going in the right direction   and we will definitely roll out the system by next year,” Marak said.

As the traffic police would go digital, the so-called allegations that traffic cops are charging or cases of corruption can be eliminated and there would be more transparency as people would know they are being charged under which Section and how much they are being charged, the police official said.
