‘State needs to regain education hub tag’

SHILLONG: UDP MLA from Nongthymmai, Jemino Mawthoh has reiterated the need for a change to ensure quality education if the state wants to regain the “education hub” tag.
Mawthoh was speaking at the inauguration of a new building of Laitumkhrah Assamese Secondary School sponsored by Asian Development Bank on Friday as part of its support to human capital development in Meghalaya. 
The legislator sought the collaboration of people for improvement of health and education and stressed the role of teachers in regard to inculcating leadership qualities among students.
With the school getting new infrastructure and facilities, principal secretary of education department, DP Wahlang urged the school not to enhance the fees.
He pointed out that students stay back home owing to lack of infrastructure but with the scheme of ADB, it is hoped that things would improve in the schools.
New furniture, desks, books in the form of a small library which is also supported by digital library are the additions aimed at giving give students of the school a better learning atmosphere.
Wahlang said more components would be added with the launch of digital classrooms with proper content.
He exhorted the school to reap benefits from the new infrastructure by improving their results as he informed that impact assessment of the scheme would be done for schools.
Laitumkhrah Assamese Secondary School is the first school in the city and greater Shillong to reap the benefit (new building) under the scheme and the second school in the state out of 117 schools which will get benefit from the ADB funding.
The first school in the state which received benefit from the scheme was a school in Nongkrem in East Khasi Hills.
The teachers will also be provided training to adapt to the transformed education system in a way that they can mentor the students better.
