Cop, govt servants among six held for extortion

Shillong: The State Police on Wednesday arrested six persons including one police inspector and four government servants for illegally extorting money from truck drivers at Umphyrnai on NH 44.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem informed that the six persons were arrested from the house of one Jeffery Syiemlieh near Hotel Comfort at Umphyrnai.

An amount of Rs 30,970 was recovered from the house together with a fine book without any counterfoil. The police also seized two vehicles, a white Ambassador (ML01 1895) and a Suzuki A-Star (ML05 G 0737).

Syiem also informed that this illegal collection of toll from truck drivers along the highway was one of the main reasons behind the severe traffic jams in the city on Wednesday.

The arrested persons were identified as Inspector Marbid Rynjah, gatekeeper Raining Khonglam, driver Edward Nongbet, timekeeper at Jowai DTO Office Andy Mutyen, helper Raj Kharumnuid and Jeffery Syiemlieh, the owner of the house where the illegally collected money was stashed.

A case has been registered in this connection and further probe was on to determine the places of postings of the arrested public servants.
