SHILLONG: Meghalaya Government has defended its decision of terminating the four power projects with private developers after ten years.

Replying to a motion moved by Mawsynram MLA PN Syiem in the State Assembly, chief minister Mukul Sangma said that   the Government could not out rightly terminate the projects since the Government had entered into an agreement with the private developers.

“We had to give them further time so that they don’t go to court,” he said even as he termed the decision of the MPA Government to cancel all power projects in the year 2008 as a mistake.

According to Sangma, the issue was politicsed in view of the 2008 Assembly elections and political parties had made a narrative that they would cancel all the power projects if they come back to power and exactly the same thing happened.

Earlier, Sangma added that next House of the Assembly would see a lot of positive outcomes of all the initiatives which has been taken by the House in the last five years.

Chief Minister also took the opportunity   to request the senior leaders of the party   who have decided not to contest the election to contest the election as they would benefit party with their wealth of experience.

Talking about the laws, he said that   Meghalaya Social Audit Act is one Act which would catch the attention of other states.

Moving the motion, PN Syiem attacked the State Government over various issues including the sorry state of power scenario in the state.

Interestingly, the motion was opposed by the Nongstoin MLA Diosstarness Jyndiang  saying that the lawmakers were breaking the law. The episode witnessed argument between the two MLAs.

He even went to say that if he was the Chairman of the House, he would have disqualified PN Syiem.
