GUWAHATI: Congress candidate Pankaj Bora was on Thursday declared elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam after the nomination papers of his only opponent were found to be invalid.

Mr Bora, currently the Press Adviser to the Assam Chief Minister, was nominated by the Congress as its party candidate for the seat in the Upper House that had fallen vacant after the death of sitting Congress MP Silvius Condpan.

A city-based journalist Jeshim Raja had also filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat, but his papers were found to be invalid.

With today being the last date for withdrawal of nomination and Mr Bora being the only contestant in fray, the former minister was declared elected to the Upper House.

His term will expire on April 2, 2016. (UNI)
