SHILLONG: The Union Ministry of Development of North East Region (MoDONER) has initiated the “Climate Change Adaptation North East Region” (CCA-NER) Project in partnership with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and the State Government of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Sikkim.

The Project will assist the rural people in the North East Region to strengthen their livelihood resilience and adaptive capacity to the impacts of climate variability and change.

GIZ will focus on capacity development of people, institutions and organisations in the NER, particularly in the states of Sikkim, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

It may be mentioned that the State Government in March this year finalized the Draft State Climate Change Action Plan (SAPCC).

The Draft Plan is the outputs of various inter and intra working groups constituted by the Government and in consultations with regional and national experts. The SAPCC has identified nine Missions in line with the seven Missions of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) of the Government of India.

To further fine-tune the SAPCC and to decide on the way forward, a two-day deliberation in the form of a “Stakeholder Consultation Workshop: Meghalaya State Action Plan on Climate Change” was organized earlier this month.

The objective of the workshop was to exchange and elicit views of the stakeholders and experts on the key elements of the State Action Plan on Climate Change, and to develop a wider perspective and common understanding on the issues governing climate change management in the state of Meghalaya.

It also included to define a priority-based road map of strategies and activities to be undertaken under each of the Missions laid out in the State Action Plan on Climate Change.

As part of the workshop deliberations, a detailed road map for the remaining current financial year in form of a short term bridge plan has been developed for each of the nine Missions stipulated in the SAPCC.

The workshop felt the need to design the short term plan in the perspective of a 5-10 years planning to co-terminus with the 12th and 13th Plan wherein climate change issues will be integrated.
