A major challenge for political parties before any election is to keep the flock together after allotment of party tickets, as contenders who lose out are usually seen to quit the party with supporters, contest as rebel candidates et al. Conversation between a senior party functionary and a young, hardworking aspiring ticket seeker went thus.
“So, Sir is it almost sure that she is likely to be nominated again?” enquired the contender with concern and added to strengthen his claim, “Although her grandson who has retired recently from Government service has threatened to oppose her”. “Hmm, looks like it will be difficult to avoid her this time too” answered the leader. “So all my hard work and assurance from all of you shall be in vain,” he lamented and continued after a long pause, ” …But I will contest nevertheless, since my preparation has been going on for the last three years”.
“Yes, I sympathise with you and shall try my best, but don’t leave the party, as you will be the loser,” advised the senior. “Then what is the way out?” the tone of frustration rising in the young leader’s voice. “Your position being second in line is the best compared to others. And one development I can assure you without any doubt,” he whispered conspiratorially. “There will definitely be a bye-election even if she wins or (pause) anything can happen even till filing of nominations,” he stated tongue in cheek. The senior pointed to the empty space at the far end of the cemetery, where both had gone to attend a funeral and added, “Once elected, continue till…”. Nearly five years after the conversation, the young man still waits.
