SHILLONG: Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation has outstanding dues of Rs 302 crore because many customers are yet to pay their electricity bills, according to official data.
The total outstanding dues till October this year payable by consumers in East and West Jaintia Hills is Rs 25.22 crore, Shillong Circle Rs 41.68 crore, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills together Rs 58.93 crore, Ri Bhoi Rs 112.27 crore, West and South West Garo Hills Rs 41.04 crore and East, North and South Garo Hills Rs 23.31 crore.
While power dues from customers are over Rs 300 crore, the state government has to pay outstanding dues to the power companies, including NEEPCO, over Rs 700 crore.
Critics have pointed out that while the State Cabinet approved loans and other financial support to MeECL and its branches, serious efforts have not been made to realise the outstanding dues from consumers.
