TURA: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma broke the five-year jinx on Wednesday when he laid the foundation stone for Tura Medical College.
This is the second base laying ceremony for a medical college in less a month. The first one was on December 6 on the premises of RP Chest Hospital in Shillong.
The project was delayed as the earlier site located under Jewilgre and Balalgre A’king near Damalgre was not approved by the Empowered Committee because as per the new guidelines of the Medical Council of India, a college should be located within 10 km of the hospital. So the government had to find an alternate site at Doldegre, 8km from Tura.
Speaking at a function at Tura Civil Hospital, Sangma said the Rs 180-crore project included setting up of the college on 100 acres of land and upgrading the district hospital.
“The civil hospital will act as a teaching hospital… we are achieving the much needed institution that will bring complete change in the delivery of health care system in the state,” he added.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma and MLAs Noverfield Marak, Dikkanchi D Shira and Bluebell R Sangma were among many other dignitaries present at the function.
Later, the chief minister also inspected some of the wards in the civil hospital. He also expressed his gratitude to the Nokmaship of Doldegre and settlers of civil hospital compound cooperating with the government.
