SHILLONG: The state has witnessed a sharp drop in the number of violent incidents related to militancy in the last three years with only 21 such reported cases in 2017 as compared to 341 in 2014.
DGP SB Singh said there were 310 militancy related incidents in 2015 and 118 in 2016.
According to the DGP, the least number of insurgency related incidents shows that militancy is on the decline in Meghalaya.
Another achievement was the arrest of 77 militants mostly from GNLA and surrender of as many as 48 cadres. Police killed six militants and recovered 32 weapons during the year.
The official said the police were also able to control the agitation against setting up of rail line in Byrnihat.
“We have contained the law and order situation arising out of the agitation against railway from spiralling further,” the DGP told The Shillong Times.
He said the focus of the police in the new year would be to intensify anti-militancy operations in Garo Hills.
Moreover, police are also preparing to ensure normalcy in the context of the upcoming Assembly polls.
Besides, police are also keeping vigil on the inter-state border in view of the update of the National Register of Citizens in Assam.
