Assam trader rescued; 6 kidnappers held

TURA: The 63-year-old businessman from Assam who was abducted on December 2 was rescued by a joint team of Meghalaya and Assam police on Friday. Six members of an inter-state gang were also arrested in this connection.
The rescue operation was launched after Assam police arrested one of the accused. He revealed the names of the other members, both from Assam and Garo Hills, of the inter-state gang. He led the joint team of Assam and Garo Hills police to Bajengdoba region of North Garo Hills where the businessman, Md Sukur Ali of Lakhipur, was confined.
The police raided Mansinggre Rongnak village under Bajengdoba police station and intercepted the criminals who tried to flee. A few rounds were fired in the air to deter the gang resulting in four of them giving themselves up. The four arrested criminals, all hailing from Mansinggre village, have been identified as Jandal Ch Sangma (20), Julius Ch Sangma (21), Brendil R Marak (22) and Sangna A Sangma (18). Another member from Assam was also arrested on the same day.
Md. Sukur Ali was on his way to a local masjid on December 2 when he was kidnapped.
The kidnappers had demanded a hefty sum as ransom from the victim’s family. The rescue comes a day after another Assam trader from Krishnai town was released
The joint team of police on Friday recovered two country-made pistols and ammunition, mobile phones and documents.
