Fatal road accidents on the rise in city

Shillong: In a clear indication that rash driving in the city has increased over the years, 33 persons have lost their lives in road mishaps till September this year.

However, this figure rise further once the statistics for October, November and December are included.

According to police statistics, 33 persons have died in accidents till September this year alone. Further, 92 persons were injured in the accidents which included 34 grievously injured and 29 with minor injuries.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on the growing instances of road accidents in Shillong, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh attributed the road accidents in the city to rash driving.

“Many times people meet with accidents as they don’t follow the rules and regulations. Many drivers lack proper driving skills,” Lyngdoh added.

The official, however, mentioned that the number of victims of road accidents in the city is less this year as compared to last year.

Statistics reveal that 40 persons were killed in road accidents in 2010, 93 people were injured last year which included 40 with grievous injuries.

Reacting to a query on the steps taken by the police to control road accidents, the police official said that the traffic police have been compounding vehicles in order to reduce the number of vehicles.

According to Lyngdoh, the traffic branch suffers from lack of man power at the moment. There is only one traffic cop for every 500 vehicles in the city, he stated.
