TURA: At a time when crime against women is on the rise in Meghalaya, the state government has executed a noble task that will help several working women in West Garo Hills and other districts in the region.
A working women’s hostel, built at Mission Compund in Tura, is equipped with modern amenities and has accommodation for 75. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated the building on Saturday.
The Rs 8-crore project was sanctioned under the Special Plan Assistance of the Department of Social Welfare.
It was undertaken by Socio Economic Women’s Society, an NGO run by the Garo Baptist Convention.
The Society will be responsible for management and maintenance.
Speaking of the challenges in running hostels, Sangma said, “It was the government’s conscious decision to ensure that such hostels are managed and maintained by partners like the Garo Baptist Convention.”
President of Garo Baptist Convention Aloysius G Momin thanked the chief minister for reposing faith in the organization.
Assistant Director, Social Welfare, Shillong, L.M. Momin also spoke on the occasion, while Director, SEWS, Anse Wanne G. Momin gave a brief report on the implementation of the project.
