Some roads in the
city are so narrow
that it has become impossible for people not only to drive on them but also to walk. Some of these narrow roads turn messy when they are used by vehicles from both sides, said residents. And with the hand railings in footpaths the condition is further worsened.
“The hand railings in every footpath have made it very difficult for people to walk freely,” complained a resident of Jaiaw. She is echoed by another resident of Mawbynna who said that the some lanes in Jaiaw, those that lead towards the National Highway, are the worst affected.
“These are basically lanes meant for two wheelers only but with vehicles plying from both sides walking is no longer possible,” rued an elderly gentleman.
Many residents observed that people taking the footpaths face difficulty on narrow stretches. “They are so narrow that two people cannot walk together. In some places it is difficult even for one person to walk,” said another resident.
“The hand railings have become a stumbling block for movement of pedestrian,” rued a resident of Fire Brigade. However, in most footpaths the hand railings have been stolen by miscreants. The hand railing at near Civil Junction is completely gone whereas towards Barik, these are stolen in parts with some remnants can be seen in gaps. (Rajib Roy)
