SHILLONG: A day after the former cabinet minister, Prestone Tynsong   attacked Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma on the issue of agar plantation, Sangma on Saturday said that  the promotion of the agar plantation and other agro-forestry plants had now drawn the attention of even Union Government which had started to support the states to promote plantations of agar and other high valued agroforestry plants besides  and a special program had been initiated.

“Department of Forest and Environment has been, therefore, tasked to notify simplifying the procedures for felling and harvesting rules of otherwise restricted rules so as to help our farmers increase their otherwise limited income,” Sangma said.

He, however, said that the irony is that the self-proclaimed political messiahs didn’t even bother to know about what could be done and what had been done for the benefit of the people and for the posterity.

According to Sangma, plantation of agar and other agro-forestry plants for their scientific commercial exploitation will generate highly remunerative income and make not just the farmers rich but generate substantial revenue on a sustainable basis for the state.

“A sincere homework by these frustrated politicians will open up their eyes and enlighten them about multiple and sustainable business opportunities agar and agroforestry farming can open up for our future generations,” he added.
