SHILLONG: The chief ministerial candidate of the People’s Democratic Front, PN Syiem, has asked other political parties to project their leaders and seek the mandate of the people.
Except PDF, none of the political parties had projected any chief ministerial candidate.
“The political parties should clearly project the leader so that voters will have clarity on who will lead the government,” Syiem said.
According to Syiem, PDF’s move to project him as the leader was aimed at giving a direction to the party unlike the Congress, NPP and others.
PDF is aiming to put up at least 30 candidates in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and it will not contest in Garo Hills since nobody applied for party tickets.
As far as NPP is concerned, the party has left it to the legislators to elect the leader after the polls depending on the numbers, which the party gets in Khasi Hills and Garo Hills region.
Though the Congress has not projected any leader, the party legislators may stick with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma if it gets majority.
The UDP-HSPDP combine too has not projected any leader as it feels that the leader will emerge after the polls.
However, the preference may go to UDP president and former chief minister Donkupar Roy.
Unlike Assam where BJP declared Sarbananda Sonowal as the chief ministerial candidate prior to the last Assembly polls, BJP is yet to project anyone in Meghalaya.
Recently, four legislators, AL Hek, Sanbor Shullai, Justine Dkhar and Robinus Syngkon joined BJP.
