SHILLONG: Mawiong dairy will be increased to 50000 litres per day by 2020, an official informed.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department official said that civil work for increasing the capacity has started under a Union Government programme. Currently, the dairy produces around 12000-13000 litres of milk in a day.
The Union Government will release installments in three phases for increasing the production in the dairy.
According to officials, as of now the production of milk is enough for Shillong, however, the demand is increasing.
The milk is used mostly by people from outside the state, while locals mostly use powder milk only for tea, adding that Army and Indian Air Force buy around 5000 litres of milk every day from Guwahati.
Officials also informed that the demand is less while the supply is more during winter as school and colleges remain closed while vice versa in summer.
Apart from Shillong, there are other two functional dairies in the state, Jowai and Tura and the demand there is around 500-1000 litres per day.
The state government had constructed two more dairies in Nongstoin and Resubelpara a long time back but the dairies are not functional.
