SHILLONG: SAKSHAM, the annual flagship event of the Petroleum Conservation Research Association under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, was launched in the city on Tuesday.
Coordinator S.S. Thangkhiew said that India’s domestic crude production was unable to meet the growing demand and the country is heavily dependent on imports which are almost 80 per cent of the total requirement, thereby resulting in huge outgo of foreign exchange, as such a very high priority should be given for conservation and efficient usage of petroleum products.
“Various activities such as drivers training programme, cycle rally, walkathon, energy audits, cooking clinics, LPG safety cum LPG saving clinics, as well as seminars shall be conducted throughout the month in the state along with the whole country to educate the masses about the importance and efficient utilisation of available energy resources,” he said. The Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology, A Rangslang, inaugurated the function.
Thangkiew added that a saving of 2 per cent in petroleum products will translate into huge savings to the tune of thousands of crores for the nation.
A pledge was taken to conserve petroleum products in all spheres of activities so that supply of these scarce resources lasts longer for the progress of the country. A quiz competition was also organised on the day and winners were awarded with various prizes.
Oil and gas PSUs are actively involved in the programme.
