SHILLONG: An RTI sought from the Shillong Municipal Board by the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), state youth wing has revealed that majority of the hawkers in the city do not possess labour licences or work permits.
The municipal board has already registered the hawkers in and around Shillong and it has also given them permission since March 31, 2017.
The youth wing of the regional party sought an RTI from the board to get wind of the number of illegal hawkers in Shillong.
It has demanded that SMB should remove the names of those hawkers who not possess the licences or work permits.
In a statement issued here, the president of KHNAM, youth wing, Thomas Passah expressed surprise at the move of SMB to register the hawkers without ascertaining any documents from them in accordance with the procedures of law.
Passah criticised the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council for taking the matter lightly by not deploying its enforcement wing to check documents from hawkers.
The KHADC, according to him, should do its part of inspection from time to time.
Condemning the concerned authorities for ignoring the matter of illegal hawkers, the KHNAM youth wing shot off a letter to the KHADC and the under secretary of urban affairs department of the state government.
