SHILLONG: The Election Department is examining the alleged violation of model code of conduct by BJP member Sanbor Shullai from South Shillong that was reported on Thursday.
Several people gathered at the residence of Shullai to collect the forms for availing themselves of Rs 5,000 each under the women’s empowerment programme even after 12 pm when the date for polls was announced by the Election Commission.
The forms distributed by Shullai were from the office of the Shillong Municipal Board for “financial inclusion margin money assistance”.
Sources from the Municipal Board said seed money of Rs 5,000 is released to women beneficiaries after filling up the forms.
However, it is yet to be known how Shullai came into the picture in releasing the forms.
When apprised of the incident, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said the matter was referred to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar.
Dkhar said the matter was taken up with the Chief Executive Officer of Shillong Municipal Board, BS Sohliya.
Dkhar also said there is a need to inquire as to how many forms were collected and how many were the photo copies of the original forms.
According to Sohliya, the Board had stopped supplying the forms since Wednesday. He added that the seed money was meant for women’s empowerment. Shullai, however, was not available for comments.
