TURA: Two Meghalaya police officers, including a lady officer, hailing from the Garo Hills have been nominated to the Indian Police Service (IPS)  by the Government of India on Thursday.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs states that the two MPS officers, Jerry Fiscer K Marak and Jubi G Momin, belonging to the 1996 MPS batch, have been nominated to the elite IPS ranks from the Joint Assam and Meghalaya cadre.

With the selection into the IPS ranks, Jubi G Momin becomes the first Garo woman police officer to be promoted to the all India police service. She has served in the state battalions and as the Superintendent of Police (SP) Fire and Emergency Service. She is currently holding the rank of Assistant Inspector general of Police- Administration, AIG (A).

In the case of Jerry Fiscer K Marak, the young officer had built a formidable name in the police corridors fighting militancy in the Garo Hills. He also holds the record for raiding the maximum number of militancy hideouts in the jungles of Garo Hills, seizing a record number of weapons, explosives and militants.

During his tenure as the SP of East Garo Hills, he came close to nabbing elusive GNLA chief Sohan D Shira in several raids on hideouts in the dense jungles. The militant leader was so irked with the repeated raids that kept him on his toes that he led a group of rebels into Williamnagar town during a winter festival event and opened fire on the ancestral home of the police officer to show his frustration.

He is currently the commanding officer (CO) of the Special Force 10 (SF-10) elite commando battalion formed in the state which is seeing action in the jungles where militants are active.
