SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi   Police on Friday morning   detained as many as 60 coal laden overloaded trucks in 13th mile in Byrnihat .

Ri Bhoi SP, Ramesh Singh informed that the trucks were trying to evade weighbridge by running to Assam from the wrong side of NH 6 which  is a serious offence endangering lives of police personnel on duty as well as other commuters.

Following the   detection, magistrate also rushed to the place of offence to take stock of the situation.

FIR has been registered under relevant sections and trucks have been seized  and the motive of fleeing trucks was to avoid unloading of overloaded coal and to prevent stamping of challan by DMR.

With Supreme Court allowing extension of transportation of coal for four months,  there has been a surge in number of trucks transporting coal.

Ri bhoi being the exit point for coal bound for Beltola, Assam, regulation of coal transportation as per NGT guidelines becomes a huge task considering that bulk of police force will now be engaged in upcoming Assembly elections.

” It will require a coordinated effort from different districts and departments,” he added.
