ULFA leaders pay last respects to ‘Mama’

Guwahati: Top pro-talks ULFA leaders, led by its ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa, on Tuesday paid their last respects to the mortal remains of ULFA ideologue Bhimkanta Buragohain, popularly known as ‘Mama’, who passed away at his Tinsukia residence on Monday evening.

Rajkhowa and other leaders, including ‘deputy c-in-c’ Raju Baruah and ‘foreign secretary’ Sashadhar Choudhury, rushed to Tinsukia after news of Mama’s demise.

Buragohain, the political adviser of ULFA died in his sleep last evening at his Ahomgaon residence, near Dholla in Tinsukia, following a cardiac arrest.

His body was on Tuesday taken to Kakopathar designated camp of the ULFA, where the outfit’s cadres paid military tributes to Buragohain.

The pro-talk faction of the outfit announced flying the ULFA’s flag half mast for the next seven days.

Buragohain’s body is being taken to the historic Rang Ghar in Sivsagar where it will be kept till tomorrow.

The cremation will take place at Charaideu in Sivsagar, near the cremation grounds of the royal Ahom kings.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had condoled the death of Buragohain, terming it a loss to the peace process between the ULFA and the government.

The hardliner faction of the ULFA had also condoled the death of Buragohain in an emailed statement.

‘Acting chairman’ Dr Abhijeet Bormon and military chief Paresh Barua, describing Mama’s death as an irreparable loss to Assam, said a three-day mourning will be observed at all ULFA camps, during which the outfit’s flag will be flown at half-mast. (Agencies)
