SHILLONG: Christmas Ha i Lyngwiar Dpei (CHLD), a musically charged traditional Christmas experience packed with indigenous colors is organizing a 90 minutes event on December 23 at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture at 6:30pm.

The evening is going to be a different one and not the stereotype Shillong’s Christmas celebration expressed in music form which have been rather too monotonous and too western. The CHLD will therefore showcase the inter-changing ways of celebrating the season of joy – with a cut of cultural fanfare.

Anchored by Shillong’s indigenous TransFusion band Summersalt, the event will be spiced up by its array of original tracks both in Khasi and English. CHLD aims at connecting with the audience in close proximity. Summersalt’s gigs are traditionally engaging and offer the audience the unique chance to participate by laying their hands on the traditional drums and by using a variety of home tools as the layman’s musical instruments.

Organized by a random group of social leaders, this event is primarily about the message they felt lead to drive home – ‘The Christmas message of peace, joy and hope’ and how it stands so relevant in the broken world today.

“The arrival of baby Jesus and Prince of Peace should remind us of the arrival of peace and justice – a supposedly perfect solution that many still fail to see,” the organizer said.

Alongside the heart pounding sounds of Ka Duitara and Ka Bom, two guest artistes – a flutist and a female singer will deliver two Christmas carols to warm the spirit of the season besides a pinch of humour is an essential cultural ingredient of the Khasi community.
