SHILLONG: The State Government will take the final call on construction of four-lane in January.

This was stated by PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh when members of different NGOs under the banner Joint Action Committee (JAC) along with land owners met him here on Friday.

Talking to newsmen after the meeting, the JAC chairman Donkupar Sumer said, “The minister has assured us that the Government will announce its decision in the second or third week of January.”

It may be mentioned that the fact-finding team submitted its report on October 27 and as per the report, majority of the people in Umsning are in favour of the construction of four-lane from the existing stretch of the National Highway 40. While the NGOs are opposing the earlier move of the State Government to construct the road from the existing road, the Umsning Town Committee has urged the State Government start the four-lane from the existing NH 40 at Umsniang without diversion.

“The State Government is only buying time on the issue,” Sumer said adding the minister has hinted that the Government might construct the four-lane from the Umsning Bypass.
