SHILLONG: With barely a couple of weeks to go before the Assembly polls in the state, the political mercury in the West Shillong constituency suddenly spiralled on Monday morning after a live Chinese hand grenade was recovered from the private vehicle of a Congress supporter in the area.
Superintendent of city police Spill Thamar informed that the police was informed about the suspected grenade at around 11 am at Bishop Falls in Lower Mawprem.
The police soon reached the spot and cordoned off the area. The live Chinese grenade was recovered from the spare tyre of a Bolero vehicle (ML05F 2927) belonging to Michael Pakyntein, a frontline supporter of Mohendro Rapsang, the Congress candidate from West Shillong.
According to Thamar, it is difficult to ascertain whether there was a political vendetta behind the incident. The police would send the grenade to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for necessary investigation. ) The police chief also said the area has already been identified as critical and deployment of additional forces was necessary as was increasing police patrolling.
On his part, Pakyntein alleged that it was the handiwork of the opposition party, adding that elections are elections after all and not war.
“Some people are scared and they are playing dirty politics,” he said while informing that he has already filed an FIR.
