MALDA (WEST BENGAL): Six babies have died in the neo- natal unit of Malda District Sadar Hospital, days after a task force formed to look into the 26 crib deaths in the facility last month had attributed low hygiene levels and inadequate work force for the fatalities.

While five babies died on Thursday night, one passed away this morning, hospital doctor R R Samanta told reporters here.

Aged between one month and two months, the infants had been referred to the hospital from far-flung areas with critical conditions, mostly with respiratory problems, he said.

Twenty-six newborns died in this government hospital in six days from November 11.

CM Mamata Banerjee, in-charge of the health department, had named a high-level task force to look into rising infant death cases in state-run hospitals.

The task force visited the Malda hospital and said that the facility lacks adequate number of doctors and health workers and the hygiene levels were also low. (PTI)
