Plaint against Manas for free rice, BPL cards

SHILLONG: A person identified as Pawan Sharma has lodged a complaint against Congress nominee of South Shillong Manas Chaudhuri for allegedly violating the model code of conduct by distributing free ration and issuing identity cards to BPL families in the constituency.
A complaint letter submitted by Sharma to the returning officer alleged that Chaudhuri did it in the capacity of being the managing trustee of the Ardhendu Chaudhuri Charitable Trust.
The letter was also emailed to media houses by Sanbor Shullai.
He alleged that the trust distributing identity cards for BPL families in the constituency and has been providing them with free rice (5kg), dal (1kg), oil (500ml) and potato (1kg) from a ration shop owned by Pradeep Rana in Jhalupara.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said the returning officer of the constituency has to examine the matter.
When contacted, Chaudhuri said this was an old initiative that began in 2012.
