SHILLONG: Mukul Sangma said that the outcome of the Assembly polls was a mandate against the BJP.
Out of the 47 constituencies where the BJP fielded candidates, the party secured only two city seats, South Shillong and Pynthorumkhrah.
“Look at the verdict of the people. It is an anti-BJP mandate,” the outgoing chief minister told reporters at his official residence on Sunday night.
According to Sangma, the party had approached the regional parties to provide a stable government but they did not respond positively.
Earlier in the day, Sangma met Governor Ganga Prasad and submitted his resignation letter.
Later, Sangma was yet again elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party by party legislators.
He said the Congress will play the role of a constructive opposition in the days to come.
According to Sangma, the role of the opposition is to keep the government on its toes.
He asserted that the party would not allow the interest of the state to be compromised.
Cong to bounce back
The Congress leader said that the internal contradictions within the NPP-led coalition will ultimately result in the Congress bouncing back.
Sangma said the party will respond critically to any agenda of the NPP-led government that may have the backing of BJP and RSS.
